Sufi heritage of Southern Kazakhstan

This tour extension takes you to the southern part of Kazakhstan, an area of unique ensembles of historical and archaeological monuments composing the system of the ancient Silk Road, such as unique historical site of Otrar, once the center of a great oasis and political district, and Turkestan housing the world famous pilgrimage place – the mausoleum of Khodja Akhmad Yassavy.

Day 1  TASHKENT – CHERNYAEVKA BORDER – SHYMKENT

ShymkentTransfer to Uzbek-Kazakh border point “Chernyaevka” (30 km, 50-60 min). After border formalities, take over by Kazakh team, drive to Shymkent (110 km, 1,5 hr). Arrival and accommodation at hotel.
Overnight at hotel.






 
Day 2  SHYMKENT – TURKESTAN – SHYMKENT

Khoja Akhmed Yassawi mausoleum (XIV c), TurkestanIn the morning, depart for Turkestan (180 km, 2,5 hrs). On the way visit Otrar ruins – one of most ancient cities of Central Asia. You will also visit Arystan-Baba mausoleum – the architectural monument of the XII-ХІV centuries, near the ruins of ancient Otrar.
Arrival in Turkestan, visit Khoja Akhmed Yassawi mausoleum built on the burial site of the Sufi poet Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, who had great authority among Muslims in the region and had an impact on Islam in Central Asia.
Lunch at local restaurant.
Return to Shymkent. Overnight at the hotel.


Day 3  SHYMKENT – ALMATY

Kazakh musical instrumentsTransfer to airport for flight to Almaty. Upon arrival to Almaty, meet local guide and driver and start sightseeing tour of Almaty. Visit Panfilov Park, Zenkov Cathedral, visit the Museum of National Musical instruments (closed on Mon) and Memorial of Glory and Eternal Flame.
Visit to the Central State Museum (closed on Tue), which displays exhibits of Kazakhstan history and development; walk along Arbat and Panfilov streets.
In the evening, visit Kok Tobe Hill, with the 372 meter tall TV Tower with a great viewing deck offering sweeping panoramic views of Almaty, as well as souvenir shops and bizarrely enough a bronze monument devoted to the Beatles. Lunch at local restaurant.
Overnight at the hotel.
Day 4  ALMATY

Transfer to the airport for your flight back home.
