On the Traces of Tamerlane: Uzbekistan - Tajikistan (with 5-day trekking)

This tour gives a unique chance to combine natural visits with history of two countries – Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Tajikistan - mostly mountainous country in the heart of Central Asia was once an important link in the ancient Silk Road. Like Nepal, it has towering mountains, where a mythical abominable snowman is said to dwell; like Tibet, it calls itself the Roof of the World. Uzbekistan - is the largest and most ancient Central Asian estate, a place of contacts of the great cultures of China, India, Middle East and Europe.

Best period to travel: from the beginning of June to mid-September

Day 1: Dushanbe
Arrival in Dushanbe –the capital and largest city of Tajikistan, situated in the western part of the country, in Hissar Valley. Meet at airport. Transfer to hotel for accommodation. Overnight at hotel.

Day 2: Dushanbe –  Sangisafed Gorge (2200 М)
In the morning start exploration of Dushanbe (800-900 m) – visit to Botanical gardens, Monument of Ismoil Samani, bazaar.
Drive to Sangisafed Gorge via Varzob gorge and tunnel (2200 m.). Arrival and accommodation at tents. Overnight in tents.

Day 3: Sangisafed Gorge – Imat Valley (2600 М) – Sangisafed Gorge 
Start trekking: hiking to Big Ganza glaciers via Imat gorge. Return to the tents. Overnight in tents.
Ascent – 400 m, descent – 400 m
Walking time - 5-6 hrs 
Day 4: Sangisafed Gorge – Alauddin Lake (2750 M)
Ascent to Alauddin Lakes (the lakes with amazing color changing from light-blue to bright ultramarine). Hiking along Fann Mountains (2hrs) - a unique part of Pamir-Alay Mountains surrounded by the lakes with crystal water. Overnight in tents.
Ascent – 550m
Walking time - 5-6 hrs 

Day 5: Alauddin Lake – Mutnoe Lake (3500 M) – Alauddin Lake
Ascent to Mutnoe Lake (3500 m), going by Piola Lake, located at the foot of Chimtarga Mountain (5494 m), one of the highest peaks of Fann Mountains. Return to Alauddin Lake. Overnight in tents.
Ascent – 750m, descent – 750 m
Walking time - 5-6 hrs 
Day 6: Alauddin Lake– Laudan Pass (3600 M) – Kulikalon Lakes(2800 M)  
Ascent through the flowerish fields and crossing Laudan pass 3600 m. View to the plateau of Kulikalon Lakes with its numerous junipers and majestic north face of the glacier with Maria 4970 and Mirali 5150 peaks. Descent to one of the lakes and overnight at tents at the height of 2800 m above the sea level.
 Ascent – 850m, descent – 800 m
Walking time – 6-7 hrs 
Day 7: Kulikalon Lake– Artuch Village (1900 M)
Walk around the lakes. Here you have an opportunity to see eternal glaziers, which do not melt under hot Asian sun.  It is possible to swim in the lake as the temperature is warmer than in other lakes. Descent along the mountain stream further through Artuch Valley.
Arrival and accommodation at guest house. Overnight at guest house.
Descent – 900 m
Walking time – 6-7 hrs 
Day 8: Artuch Village (1900 M) – Khudjand
Drive to Khudjand - located on an ancient caravan route from China to the Mediterranean, was a famous town marking the farthest expansion of Alexander the Great. Arrival and accommodation at hotel.
Panoramic tour of Khudjand: Oriental Bazaar - the biggest bazaars of Central Asia is Payshanba bazaar, one of the interesting places in Khudjand attracting people with various sounds and tastes; Shaykh Musliddin mosque. Overnight at hotel.

Day 9: Khudjand – Tajik/Uzbek Border point “Oybek” – Samarkand (80 + 235 KM)
Transfer to Tajik-Uzbek border point “Oybek”. After passing the border formalities, meet by local Uzbek team. Drive to SamarkandUnesco - the city which has marvelous and attractive power. Poets and historians of the past called it “Rome of the East, “The pearl of the Eastern Moslem World”.Arrival and accommodation at hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Day 10: Samarkand
Full day sightseeing tour of Samarkand including majestic Registan Square, the most beautiful place of Central Asia, the Bibi Khanum Mosque, the necropolis of Shakhi Zinda and Mausoleum of Gur-Emir. Overnight at hotel.

Day 11: Samarkand – Bukhara (300 KM)
A.M.: Continue observation of Samarkand: visit to Observatory of Ulugbek (Ulugbek, Timur the Great’s grandson, was the founder of the unique constructions of the observatory (1428-1429). Time at leisure.
P.M.: Drive to BukharaUnesdo – one of the most prosperous cites of a Great Silk Road. Arrival and accommodation at hotel. Overnight at hotel.

Day 12: Bukhara
Full day sightseeing tour of Bukhara: Samanids mausoleum, the burial place of the Samanids(9th–10th cc.) is a masterpiece of Central Asian architecture. The building boasts no colorful facades and paintings, but claims its fame as being the first Muslim mausoleum in Central Asia; Chashma-Ayub shrine (XIV-XVI cc.) known as a curative source; Bolo-Khauz mosque including mosque (XVIII c.), minaret (1914-17) and basin; fortress Ark (citadel), a fortified residence of Emirs of Bukhara; Poi-Kalyan complex (Big Minaret from the 12th century is the symbol of the city) consisting of Miri-Arab madrassah (XVI c.), Kalyan minaret (XII c.); Chor Minor, a colorful madrassah with four peculiar looking towers – the Chor-Minor (1807) - was used as a library for students; Madrassah of Ulugbek (1417) was built during the time of Ulugbek, Abdulaziz-khan madrassah built in the middle of the 17th c. Overnight at hotel.
Day 13: Bukhara – Tashkent
Continue exploration of Bukhara: Liabi-Khauz Complex: Nodir-Divan-begi madrassah (XVII c.), Kukeldash madrassah (XVI c.), Khonako (XVII c.); Magoki-Attari mosque (XII c., XVI c.).
Afternoon at leisure.
Transfer to airport for evening flight to Tashkent. Arrival and accommodation at hotel.
Overnight at hotel.
Day 14: Tashkent
Start exploration of the capital of Uzbekistan – Tashkent was known as important trade point on the Great Silk Route. Today it is a huge modern city of European style.Visit to an old part of Tashkent with its madrassahs and mosques, then panoramic tour of modern part of Tashkent: Museum of Applied Arts, Independence Square, Amir Temur Square, and the Alisher Navoi Theatre Square. Overnight at hotel.

Day 15: Tashkent  Departure
Transfer to airport for your next destination.
This trekking tour with 5-7 hours walk per day between 400 m and 1600 m in altitude. So you should be in very good physical condition. It is necessary to take: a backpack, a sleeping bag, sunglasses, high mountain boots, cap and etc.
Equipment provided on spot: tents (for 2 or 3 pax), mattresses, kitchen tent and etc.
You will be accompanied by the tour guides from arrival till departure in both countries (one guide in Tajikistan and the other in Uzbekistan). During trekking tour mountain guide, cook, drovers of the mules will join the group.
